The Zillah community has had a library since the early 1920's, and Zillah was the very first incorporated town to join the Rural County Library District. Mrs. Howard Follansbee and Mrs. Rudolph Schmidt led the effort to join the district, and the library opened January 1, 1946. Mrs. Mary Meade was the first librarian, and she remained in the position until her 80th birthday. Zillah was also one of the founding members when the County Rural Library District and Yakima Library joined to form Yakima Valley Regional Library. The library has moved and expanded several times. It is still one of the smaller libraries in square footage, and Community Librarian Ferne Greene says that one of the advantages to using the Zillah Library is that "you can't get lost." Despite it's size, it is a busy library, with enthusiastic borrowers and heavy use of the four public computers. It is conveniently located in downtown Zillah.
